How Drugs Destroy Athletic Ability - 1181 Words

The human body can do a magnitude of activities, from running to climbing to lifting extremely heavy objects that can all go away in the blink of an eye by using drugs. One of the key things to a healthy and athletic human is cardiovascular ability, or the strength of the heart and how efficient it is pumping blood throughout the body. Just by preforming around thirty minutes of exercise a day, can improve the body’s cardiovascular health drastically. Just by preforming that little bit of exercise a day the body can reduce in fatty weight. The cholesterol levels drastically change too by increasing in HDL (good cholesterol) and decreasing in LDL (bad and total cholesterol) . While drinking alcohol it blunts the nervous system down and the body loses most or almost all of muscle control. Alcohol does not exactly destroy muscle but weight gain makes it harder to exercise, so lack of exercise could be a reason for muscles to whiter away. A lot of athletes use meth to decrease body fat. This can be done because of the drastic changes in the body’s metabolism. The drug is used because of the effects on the human brain. It releases stimulants in the brain to make it seem like the body is having an adrenaline rush. The only plus side to meth is that it helps ADHD by giving the opposite affect to people that have that condition. A normal person who does not have ADHD makes them almost go insane. Meth is super addictive and a lot of times the person doing the drug will commit extremely violent acts to acquire money to buy more of the mid-priced drug. The person can have extreme mood swings and become depressed or even suicidal. Panic attacks can acre because the person doing the drug is expecting something and it doesn’t happen. The b ody starts to lose control of the muscles and the body. The person can start to have ticks close to Parkinson’s or turrets. William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” Free Essays

William Faulkner’s â€Å"A Rose for Emily† was originally published in the April 30, 1930, issue of Forum. It was his first short story published in a major magazine. A slightly revised version was published in two collections of his short fiction, These 13 (1931) and Collected Stories (1950). We will write a custom essay sample on William Faulkner’s â€Å"A Rose for Emily† or any similar topic only for you Order Now It has been published in dozens of anthologies as well. â€Å"A Rose for Emily† is the story of an eccentric spinster, Emily Grierson. An unnamed narrator details the strange circumstances of Emily’s life and her odd relationships with her father, her lover, and the town of Jefferson, and the horrible secret she hides. The story’s subtle complexities continue to inspire critics while casual readers find it one of Faulkner’s most accessible works. The popularity of the story is due in no small part to its gruesome ending. Faulkner often used short stories to â€Å"flesh out† the fictional kingdom of Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, for his novels. In fact, he revised some of his short fiction to be used as chapters in those novels. â€Å"A Rose for Emily† takes place in Jefferson, the county seat of Yoknapatawpha. Jefferson is a critical setting in much of Faulkner’s fiction. The character of Colonel Sartoris plays a role in the story; he is also an important character in the history of Yoknapatawpha. However, â€Å"A Rose for Emily† is a story that stands by itself. Faulkner himself modestly referred to it as a â€Å"ghost story,† but many critics recognize it as an extraordinarily versatile work. As Frank A. Littler writes in Notes on Mississippi Writers, ‘‘A Rose for Emily’’ has been ‘‘read variously as a Gothic horror tale, a study in abnormal psychology, an allegory of the relations between North and South, a meditation on the nature of time, and a tragedy with Emily as a sort of tragic heroine. ’’ How to cite William Faulkner’s â€Å"A Rose for Emily†, Papers

Human Anatomy And Physiology Essay Example For Students

Human Anatomy And Physiology Essay Good Morning Mr. Brown, my name is Mona and I am a physician’s assistant. Thank you for coming in to meet with me today. Today I’ll be going over your recent lab work along with the results. The last time you were in to see the doctor he ordered testing for you that is known as a lipid panel or a cholesterol panel. A lipid panel is done to measure four main things which are your cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, and LDL I will now tell you a little about your results and explain what your results mean for your health. You may feel free to ask any questions to gain clarification of anything that you may not understand. First I will discuss your Triglyceride level results, I want to explain to you exactly what triglycerides are before giving you your personal result. Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood. Whenever you eat something your body automatically turns any calories it feels is unnecessary for you to have into triglycerides. The triglycerides are then stored in your fat cells, and later on the hormones in your body will set free triglycerides to be used as energy for you in between your meals. Your triglyceride level result is 145 mg/dl which is good. A normal triglyceride level is considered to be Less than 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Both Triglycerides and cholesterol are separate types of lipids that circulate in your blood. Triglycerides keep unused calories in somewhat of a reserve storage and they are released to provide your body with energy as needed. Cholesterol is a fat that would normally not be dissolvable to flow freely through the blood, however our bodies has made it possible for cholesterol to be dissolvable and flow freely through the blood with lipoproteins. Lipoproteins area a group of proteins that is dissolvable. Lipoproteins combine with and carry fat through the blood plasma in the body. Cholesterol is used to build up certain types of cells and hormones within your body. Normal overall cholesterol levels are considered to be under 200 mg/dl. Your test results showed a level of 210 mg/dl, this places you in a range for high cholesterol. High Density lipoproteins which are often called HDL is the type of cholesterol that is usually referred to as the good type of cholesterol. Having a higher number is better for your health when it relates to HDL. HDL works within your body to maintain the strength of your blood vessels, it helps to allow your blood to flow in the proper way through your body without restraint. Your test results showed a HDL level of 33 mg/dL, a normal range for men is somewhere between 40 and 49 mg/dL. Due to your lower than normal result of HDL this places you at a potential risk for complications in the blood flow process throughout your arterial walls. Low Density lipoproteins which are often called LDL is the type of cholesterol that is labeled as bad cholesterol. When speaking in terms regarding LDL the lower you numbers are that is the better it is for you in relation to your health. Your LDL levels are 160 mg/dL, A normal result is less than 100 mg/dl. Your result puts you in an elevated risk category. Having a higher than normal LDL level raises your potential to encounter issues with your heart. High LDL levels slow down the way blood flows through your vessels due to fatty buildup on the walls of your arteries. Now we will go over each result and discuss a few ways in which we can work on improving areas that showed as not so good, and ways to continue to stabilize areas that are good according to your labs. Your Triglyceride level is good, a few ways to ensure that it remains that way is to try and watch your carb intake. Try to be careful about the portion sizes of breads, crackers, bagels, and pastas that you consume. .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 , .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 .postImageUrl , .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 , .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6:hover , .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6:visited , .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6:active { border:0!important; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6:active , .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6 .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3317072efbba4ed198c42fdebe373da6:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Camila is an Argentinean film set in the mid 19th EssayI think everyone enjoys a nice potato chip from time to time, but those delicious crisps are loaded with lots of things that can wreak havoc on our bodies functioning. Stretching and walking are two of the more simple exercise techniques that can be done to booth loosen up tight joints, help you gain more flexibility, and even promote weight loss. A 11/2 cup serving of oatmeal contains a great serving of healthy fibers. Foods like beans, apples, pears, and prunes are also good types of fibers. 2) Omega 3 fatty acids and fish The name â€Å"fatty† when it comes to Omega 3’s fatty acids is misleading because the type of fatty acids in Omega 3’s help to reduce blood pressure and the risk of developing blood clots. Salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, and halibut along with a few others are great types of fish to eat in order to get a nice healthy dose of Omega 3’s. Baking or grilling your fish is the best way to eat it because you can avoid adding extra fats that are typically used when frying fish. 3) Almonds, walnuts Almonds and walnuts are good for you when eaten in small amounts. Try to steer away from salted, coated, or covered nuts because they contain extra calories to nuts which are already a bit higher in calorie content. Using sliced nuts or almonds in salads instead of using croutons is a great way to cut back on calories. 4) Olive oil Olive oil is the best choice of oil to use for cooking and as a dressing on salads. Olive oil has heart healthy antioxidants in it that can help keep your HDL cholesterol levels good and lower your LDL cholesterol levels. 5) Foods that contain plant sterols It might surprise you to know that plant sterols are in many of the foods you probably already eat from time to time. Letter to Newlyweds free essay sample

Letter to Newlyweds Rosemarie Velez Com200: Interpersonal Communication Prof. Megan Pope March 25, 2013 Dear Newlyweds, It has come to my attention that you have been seeking advice to keep the love alive throughout your marriage. I may say I am no expert but my research has given me the advantage to help you out. As a couple you should practice ways to keep your marriage alive; managing interpersonal conflicts, learning the importance of listening, and learning how to intact your emotions and speak to one another is what will help you understand one another. I will section these main points for you so that you will understand more. Managing interpersonal conflicts The reason being that it is important to manage interpersonal conflicts is because you want to make sure that issues are being resolved, you never want to have a disagreement about something and never come to a common ground in the situation it will only cause tension and make things worse. We will write a custom essay sample on Letter to Newlyweds or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Based on a website I have found that gives relationship advice, it is said, â€Å"People have varying degrees of comfort with conflict. Some prefer avoiding it at all costs. Unfortunately, those costs tend to increase the longer issues are left unaddressed. Therefore, learning how to manage and resolve conflict is to your benefit†. (Life Tips, 2013). From this statement it is clear that there are couples who put very serious issues in the back burner and when that occurs the issue becomes long term. That is why you must learn how to manage your conflicts and instead or yelling at each other it is best that you speak calmly. Something else that involves managing your interpersonal conflicts includes understanding the other person. â€Å"Attempt to understand the other persons point of view. Dismissing the others views, assigning blame, and exclusive focus on your own perspective are all counterproductive. † (Life Tips, 2013) When communicating with your partner about something it is clear that your feelings are not the only thing that matters. You must be able to put your views aside and listen and try to understand why your partner feels the way they feel. Being understanding is a step to making things better because once you both understand the others point of view than you can come together as one and have a common ground on the issue. Develop strategies for active, critical, and empathic listening When communicating with your partner is listening, not hearing, listening. Some partners say that they are listening when they really aren’t. When talking things out paying attention to what your partner is saying or how they are feeling is important. The reason why it is so important because when you are not listening to your partner it becomes an issue. â€Å"One of the most neglected interpersonal communication skills, and a core competence we must master to be an effective communicator, is listening. You cannot understand others, respond appropriately to what they say, and provide helpful feedback if you have not listened†. (Sole, 2011) This is a statement that completely backs up to what I just said. Listening is a big factor in communication in a marriage or in any relationship in that matter. You have to give one hundred percent to keep that relationship healthy. Listening is the act of hearing and interpreting the message being conveyed from another person. Many couples get together and stop listening to one another. All they do is hear. Hearing is not enough if a couple wants to remain together. (Diggs, Angela, 2009) In this statement that is found in an article that was posted on Helium. com Diggs stated four reasons why listening is important and they were; keeps relationships together, helps develop intimacy in connection, shows respect and healing to relationships. I hope that these four reasons why listening is important can help you two to always listen to one another. Emotional intelligence and its role in effective interpersonal relationships Being able to control your emotions in an effective interpersonal relationship means controlling that moment where information is given that must be clear with emotions not getting out of control. An example I have found on cbtrecovery. com states, â€Å" · In relationships: Don’t let hurts and problems build up. Examples? How can you prevent problems from getting worse? Resolve conflicts before they get overwhelming. End hopeless relationships. † Being that you two are newlyweds your marriage is fresh everything is perfect. From what I have heard from people that are married things change over time; kids are made, a house is bought, things become more stressful and both of you will have new responsibility that you both have to take care of together as a team. I know that as women we can get very emotional about everything and as a man emotions will not be shown because it is ignored. So as a husband and wife you should learn how to intact your emotions so that it is shown but not shown too much. As a married couple you have to be able to communicate all the time even if it’s just talking about at favorite movie or the activity you did or even how work went. Doing that can help enhance your communication and if or when there is something that is bothering the other person it will be talked about. An example I have that may help you is my mom’s marriage. Her communication with her husband was very poor so when issues aroused it became very emotional for her because she took her time speaking about it. When that happens it can cause confusion it can even cause misunderstanding in the relationship which is not very good. My mom end up learning that and now she is separated. I always say communication is key to a healthy relationship and from the information I have given you so far it seems true; especially for marriage. This is a statement from a doctor and it explains the different emotional types of people. â€Å"In healthy, constructive relationships, it’s no secret that solid communication skills and the ability to process your emotions always take a front-row seat. But did you know that in the world of relationships, there are two different types of people? You’re either an emotionally responsible person or an emotionally dependent one. Emotional responsibility is very important in a healthy, satisfying relationship. It facilitates personal growth, as well as growth between you and your partner†. (Dr. Laura Berman) Recognize how words have the power to create and affect attitudes, behavior, and perception The way you speak to your partner and the way you act is a really big thing that causes issues in your relationship. If you and your partner are in a disagreement and one is yelling at the other it tends to cause an emotional imbalance within the person. Meaning that the emotions are going crazy to the point the person doesn’t understand why they are being yelled at. In my own experience I have had moments where as my partner would get upset about something and speak to me in a disrespectful manner and when I would try to speak to him to see what was wrong his body language and facial expression would show his aggravation. When that would happen my emotions would erupt and I would not understand what was going on that caused the situation to get worse because either we would ignore everything and it would build up or we would just argue and never fix things. It’s important that when you are talking with your partner that you are being respectful you are listening you are showing that you are listening instead of having wandering eyes. This can help your communication get better because you will know how to control the words you choose and learn how to have the write body language and facial expression. The words you choose can make your relationship a lot better, or at times, it can push your partner away from you forever. You may communicate well, share your dreams, respect your lover and even be great in bed, but the way you use the power of words could still affect your relationship on a subconscious level. † (Avdeeva, Natalia, 2012) This statement supports what I have stated. The proce ss by which self-concept is developed and maintained In your relationship there are things that you both have to do to be at peace with yourself. In marriage things can be perfect as a team but sometimes things aren’t always perfect within you. So that’s where self-concept comes in and I will give you examples of how it can be maintained. Self-concept is the way you look at yourself it’s a judgment that you have of yourself. If you look at yourself in a negative way it can cause your partner to look at you the same way. You want to always see and think of yourself in a positive way regardless of what. If you feel ugly and your partner finds you’re the most beautiful thing on earth than you believe it. The way you look, your self-esteem and self-worth all should be positive. I know for women our self-image can mean so much that will cause our self-esteem low but when being in a relationship you have to be positive about yourself that shows that you are confident in yourself in your marriage and a person that won’t let things ruin anything. â€Å"Developing a healthy self-concept takes deliberate planning and concentrated effort. It takes acknowledging your intrinsic value as a human being, and then working to acquire the skills needed to confront the many challenges and adversities we encounter in life. When you possess a healthy self-concept, nothing can rattle you, or take you off your stride. You are confident, poised, and assured because you know you are equipped to handle whatever comes your way. † (Essential Life Skills) A healthy self-concept includes knowing yourself, assessing your strengths and weaknesses as well as knowing your potential to do things. You should always love and accept who you are, be true to who you are and take responsibilities for the decisions you make. To maintain these healthy ways to self-concept is to be positive as I said before. It also helps to have positive people around you as well. That should be able to help you with who you are and how you view each other as one. Now don’t ever get discouraged if you have disagreements about something just remember the importance of interpersonal communication as a married couple. As newlyweds this is the time to get to know each other more, on a deeper level. The advice I have given you is to get you started and to continue to keep your marriage healthy and happy. Controlling your interpersonal conflicts, listening and understand each other, and speaking to each other the right way where emotions and being thought of is what is going to help you, not only as a married couple but as friends and as people. An Explanation of Acid Mine Drainage

An Explanation of Acid Mine Drainage In a nutshell, acid mine drainage is a form of water pollution that happens when rain, runoff, or streams come in contact with rock that is rich in sulfur. As a result, the water becomes very acidic and damages downstream aquatic ecosystems. In some regions, it is the most common form of stream and river pollution. Sulfur-bearing rock, especially one type of mineral called pyrite, is routinely fractured or crushed during coal or metal mining operations, and accumulated in piles of mine tailings. Pyrite contains iron sulfide which, when in contact with water, dissociates into sulfuric acid and iron. The sulfuric acid dramatically lowers the pH, and the iron can precipitate and form an orange or red deposit of iron oxide that smothers the bottom of the stream. Other harmful elements like lead, copper, arsenic, or mercury may also be stripped from the rocks by the acidic water, further contaminating the stream. Where Does Acid Mine Drainage Happen? It mostly occurs where mining is done to extract coal or metals from sulfur-bearing rocks. Silver, gold, copper, zinc, and lead are commonly found in association with metal sulfates, so their extraction can cause acid mine drainage. Rainwater or streams become acidified after they run through the mine’s tailings. In hilly terrain, older coal mines were sometimes built so that gravity would drain out water from inside the mine. Long after those mines are closed, acid mine drainage continues to come out and contaminate waters downstream. In the coal mining regions of the eastern United States, over 4,000 miles of stream have been impacted by acid mine drainage. These streams are mostly located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. In the western U.S., on Forest Service land alone there are over 5,000 miles of affected streams.   In some circumstances, sulfur-bearing rock can be exposed to water in non-mining operations. For example, when construction equipment cuts a path through bedrock to build a road, pyrite can be broken up and exposed to air and water. Many geologists thus prefer the term acid rock drainage, since mining is not always involved. Environmental Effects Drinking water becomes contaminated. Groundwater can be affected, impacting local water wells.Waters with a very low pH can support only severely reduced animal and plant diversity. Fish species are some of the first to disappear. In the most acidic streams, only some specialized bacteria survive.Because of how corrosive it is, acidic stream water damages infrastructure such as culverts, bridges, and stormwater pipes.Any recreational potential (e.g., fishing, swimming) and scenic value for streams or rivers affected by acid mine drainage are greatly reduced.   Solutions Passive treatment of acidic streams can be conducted by routing the water into a purpose-built wetland designed to buffer the low pH. Yet, these systems require complex engineering, regular maintenance, and are applicable only when certain conditions are present.Active treatment options include isolating or treating the waste rock to avoid contact of water with sulfates. Once water has been contaminated, options include pushing it through a permeable reactive barrier that neutralizes the acid or routing it through a specialized wastewater treatment plant. Compare my ometown wich is saudi arabia to the city i live in now wich Essay

Compare my ometown wich is saudi arabia to the city i live in now wich is murfreesboro TN - Essay Example Americans value independence and freedom than the people of Saudi Arabia. This entails independence and freedom for religion, gender, among others. In contrast, Saudi Arabia restricts individual freedom. Everything has to be done according to Islam and ancient customs. There is also a significant difference in weather between Saudi Arabia and Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the winter season is characterized by snowy conditions and the summer with hot conditions. In contrast, Saudi Arabia is always sunny and hot. There is no chance of experiencing snowy conditions in Saudi Arabia. Finally, people in America have little respect for the law in comparison to people in Saudi Arabia. This is because in Saudi Arabia, the law is made according to strict Islamic rules while in America the law is made to incorporate all. I would love to live in Murfreesboro, Tennessee than Saudi Arabia because of the above differences between the two areas. There is freedom in America, there is a variety of weather, and the law is inclusive of all regardless of religion, age, gender, or

Unit ii assesment Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Unit ii assesment - Coursework Example ure of an organization starts with the founders of the company and thus it flows from management downwards and it becomes acquired by new people joining the company which forms a habit of the organization. Corporate culture can be subdivided into major constituencies such as the customers, investors, government and the community and methods of operation styles such as risk taking, innovation conservative among others. A good and healthy culture increases the productivity of a company but an unhealthy culture decreases the growth of a company. A company with a healthy culture makes the employee feel as part of the company, they work as a team to help in the overall success of the company. A successful company motivates their employees to increase their productivity and level commitment which improves the quality of their products and services while an unhealthy corporate culture makes their employees feel like individuals who tend to work for their paychecks and thus not go an extra mile this leads to the failure of goals attainment of the project. For a successful project to be achieved there is need for a clear explanation and sharing of the vision of the company to everyone in the company. â€Å"Let your vision for the company becomes their vision for the company† (Malley, 2000). A well defined vision motivates the workers to understand their roles and what to do in order to help in the achievement of the set objectives or goals. But a poor defined vision or a company with no vision is reactive and will seldom lead to project failures. A corporate culture that values equality will lead to successful projects since all employees will be treated equally irrespective of their gender, relations and ethnicity. If the company is a family business the bloodlines should be irrelevant and also no favoritism for this will form barriers to success. In O’ Malleys et al’s article on How to Create a Winning Culture, it states that â€Å"showing favoritism in the workplace

How to Treat Depression Without Medication Essay Example for Free

How to Treat Depression Without Medication Essay While it takes more than a simple â€Å"lifestyle change† to effectively attack a medical issue such as depression, it is not more medication that this Country needs more of, but rather a greater awareness, better mental health education and greater access to therapy for those suffering from this condition. Depression is as much an organic, physiological issue as a broken bone or heart problem but because it cannot be seen it is often ignored, dismissed, mistreated or over-medicated by the vast majority of healthcare providers. Todays HMO driven, medication dependent society tends to throw pharmaceutical band-aids at the problem of depression. A more holistic, therapeutic approach, ideally involving the family/support system of the patient would, in the long run, be both a more effect and lasting treatment for the patient and more cost effective as well. While depression can, in fact, be helped by the use of proper medications, any long-term treatment must include counseling/therapy and significant and lasting lifestyle changes. Depression is, in fact, the catalyst that has lead me to pursue my current academic and professional dream to become a Psychologist. It is also something that I have a great deal of personal experience with, both as a parent of a clinically depressed teenager and as a woman living with a depressive disorder myself. In my own personal experience, the majority of doctors tend to â€Å"throw medication† at the issue of depression, when in fact, for many patients, therapeutic counseling and psychotherapy is often all that is needed. This tendency to medicate first and counsel second, especially in teens, can be irreparably damaging. Psychological medications, by their very nature, effect brain chemistry and can have huge negative side effects: suicidal tendencies, physical aggression, dramatic weight gain (which can have psychological and other medical side effects of its own), to name a few. These side effects can often times be even more emotionally damaging and dangerous to the patient than the depression itself. In 1998, after years of struggling, I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. My own personal struggle with depression has also involved quite a few medications, with varying successes and varying degrees of side-effects. While searching for an effective treatment for me, my doctors prescribed any number of SSRIs, Beta Blockers and other commonly prescribed medications for the treatment of depressive disorders. I fought with sexual side effects, weight gain, crippling panic attacks, suicidal thoughts and more. In the end, I chose to wean myself from the medication and focus on therapy and the necessary lifestyle changes that go along with it. It is still a daily struggle and a choice to be happy and fight the â€Å"demons† that haunt me, but with the help of God, my family and my therapist, I am happier and more â€Å"well-adjusted† than ever before in my life. In a developing brain, like that of a depressed adolescent, these potentially hazardous side effects can be even more detrimental. In 2006, My then 14 year old daughter, when faced with depression due to her parents’ divorce and adjustment to life as an â€Å"Army Brat,â€Å" was put on Prozac by her Family Practice Physician. Within 30 days she had to be hospitalized and detoxified after suffering a psychotic episode at school and weeks of suicidal and homicidal thoughts. After a year of numerous diagnoses, multitudes of different psychological medications and weight gain of almost 80 pounds, she was no more emotionally stable than she was when she had begun the treatment. With the assistance of a new Psychiatrist and Primary Care Physician, we weaned her off all of the psychological medications and instead enrolled her in bi-weekly, one-on-one counseling with a Psychologist. It took her almost 3 years to undo the damage the experience with the hospital and medication trials had inflicted on her. She is finally doing well, is stable and uses counseling, meditation, breathing techniques and a number of other therapeutic tools to deal with the stresses of life, rather than continuing to be medication-dependent and suffering the side effects of those medications.

Congresss Presidental Conquest :: essays research papers

Congress’s Presidential Conquest   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"I am sworn to uphold the Constitution as Andy Johnson understands it and interprets it.† This is a simple quote from a simple man. 17th President of the United States, Andrew Johnson, and Congress had a sharp conflict about the way the South should be â€Å"re-constructed† in the wake of the just finished Civil War. The interpretation of this period of US history has been that Johnson was railroaded by radical Republicans and did not deserve to be impeached. Johnson wanted reconciliation with the former rebel states of the South, and that radical Republicans were out to humiliate the South and force a radical reconstruction program on them. The impeachment of President Andrew Johnson was unjust and primarily driven by radical members of the Congress who held different views on Reconstruction and how it should be accomplished.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Andrew Johnson was born to a poor family in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was never formally educated but until the age of 16, he was apprenticed to a tailor. At 16, he ran away to Greeneville, Tennessee where he opened his own tailor shop. He would eventually marry Eliza McCardle who helped to improve on his reading, writing, and math. Because his tailor business was doing so well, he was able to save up and buy a few slaves of his own. The two would have five children together. In 1829 Johnson was elected councilman and mayor of Greenville. During this, Johnson discovered a chic for public speaking. He made a rapid rise within the ladder of political offices. In 1835 he was sent to the state general assembly. Running as a Democrat, he was elected to the state senate and then two years later the House of Representatives which he served in until 1853. While in Congress, Johnson was notorious for his advocacy of cheap western land for the homesteaders and support for the Mexican War. He was elected twice as governor of Tennessee in 1853 and 1855. In 1857, he was in the U.S. Senate and he again tried to struggle for the homestead bill. Unfortunately the measure was vetoed by President James Buchanan. One of the biggest jumps in his political career came in 1862 when Lincoln appointed him military governor of Tennessee. He took up his post at the state capital. In effort to win votes from the Democrats and to balance Lincoln’s Union ticket with Southern Democrat, the Republicans nominated Johnson for vice-president.

Ancient Roman Foods

During the times of ancient Rome and its glory days of ruling the world, the foods were the same as the lifestyle was: â€Å"simple and austere. † The people of the time were just simply not worried about feeling the need to eat fast and move on to better things than eating. They were significantly more concerned with enjoying the food sitting on the table in front of them and enjoying the moment. By enjoying their meals, they were able to enjoy the other components of their lives and from there, to essentially enjoy life to its fullest. â€Å"Carpe diem. Essentially, they enjoyed the most simple things in life. Nowadays, people are far more concerned with living a fast-paced lifestyle filled with luxury, money, and speed than tasting and savoring the many flavors present in their foods. Moreover, the foods during those ancient times were a lot healthier, consisting of mostly grains and vegetables. Now in our present society, while there is much more variety to the things we eat, there are also a lot more fats, greases, and various oils. Tons of present day traditions hold meat in the highest regard of any other food group. We enjoy that most meals include some sort of meat, and more often than not, a very large amount of it if not multiple kinds of meat. People hold barbeques where the main event is the meat being cooked on the smoky grill surrounded by laughter. The meat actually brings people together and leads to a feeling of belonging and happiness. In stark contrast, dining during ancient times rarely even had any meat at all. There are records of people complaining when they had to rely on meat to eat as opposed to their normal delicacies of delicious vegetables. They simply did not like the taste or texture. For people concerned with enjoying their food to the fullest, this is a terrible dilemma. It is not one our society can easily understand. We see it every single day on television, we hear it on the radio, and we create our own experiences of many children’s complete and utter distaste for various varieties of vegetables. Many children and people detest anything green, some children and people hate carrots for reasons of their own, and a few people and children despise all vegetables in general. In ncient Rome however, everyone simply loved vegetables. It was these very vegetables that were eaten the most often. Cato tells us that raw vegetables were often eaten with vinegar and cooked vegetables were often eaten with Olive Oil. These additions added flavor and were far more healthy than the additives with which we have made ourselves familiar in modern day. Additional contrast shows the additional fats present nowadays because of our society’s love for butter and many other additives that contain various fats, unnecessary carbohydrates, and other disgusting oils. Odd to think about for modern American’s is that Romans were not familiar with potatoes, wheat as from the America’s, and corn. We often see thee items present in most modern meals in some form or another. Almost every fast food meal from any fast food restaurant comes with French Fries unless another â€Å"healthier† option is specifically selected by the consumer making the order. The closest alternative during Roman times was bread, which was used for most traditions including wedding ceremonies and other important events to the people. Another American tradition includes that of consuming alcohol, sometimes so much as on the daily. Whether for a party or some sort of escape from reality in excessively depressive situations, people flock to the bars and night clubs periodically for an alcoholic therapy of sorts. In the past during those times, Romans would drink wine with every single meal, but it was not for the same reasons as are present in modern times. They enjoyed the wide range of flavors present in the wines for the same reasons that they tried to enjoy their foods to the fullest: they simply wanted to enjoy their lives. They would drink wine as frequently as present-day society enjoys soda, water, and tea when we go out to eat and even in our homes after grocery shopping. The increase in traditional use and consumption of bread also increased that of wine. In all reality throughout the decades, in history and in present, this makes sense. When you eat more bread, you are bound to be thirstier, and wine then comes into play as a quencher for that thirst. Especially during those times, the bread was excessively coarse and made of rough grain. It was far rougher than the grain with which we have familiarized ourselves with now. It caused a drying out of the mouth even worse than we are now familiar with. During the times of ancient Rome and its marvelous glory days of ruling the world, the foods were the same as the lifestyle was: â€Å"simple and austere. † The people of the time were just simply not worried about feeling the need to eat fast and move on to better things than eating. No w in our present society, while there is much more variety to the things we eat, there are also a lot more fats, greases, and oils. It was easier to live and let live during those times, and it can all be shown in their food and dining.

Biography of Atlanta Mass Murderer Mark Orrin Barton

Biography of Atlanta Mass Murderer Mark Orrin Barton Known as being one the largest mass murderers in Atlantas history, day-trader Mark Barton, 44, went on a killing spree on July 29, 1999, at two Atlanta-based trading firms: All-Tech Investment Group and Momentum Securities. Upset over seven weeks of big losses in day trading, which had brought him to financial ruin, Bartons killing spree resulted in 12 people killed and 13 injured at the two companies. After a daylong manhunt and surrounded by police, Barton committed suicide by shooting himself at an Acworth, Georgia, gas station when his capture became imminent. The Killing Spree At around 2:30 p.m. on July 29, 1999, Barton entered Momentum Securities. He was a familiar face around there and just like any other day, he began chatting with the other day traders about the stock market. Dow Jones was showing a dramatic drop of about 200 points adding to a week of disappointing numbers. Smiling, Barton turned to the group and said, Its a bad trading day, and its about to get worse. He then took out two handguns, a 9mm Glock and a .45 caliber Colt, and began firing. He fatally shot four people and injured several others. He then went across the street to All-Tec and began shooting, leaving five dead. According to reports, Barton had lost an estimated $105,000 in about seven weeks. More Murders After the shooting, investigators went to Bartons home and discovered the bodies of his second wife, Leigh Ann Vandiver Barton, and Bartons two children, Matthew David Barton, 12, and Mychelle Elizabeth Barton, 10. According to one of the four letters left by Barton, Leigh Ann was murdered the night of July 27, and the children were murdered on July 28, the night before the shooting spree at the trading firms. In one of the letters, he wrote that he did not want his children to suffer without having a mother or father and that his son was already showing signs of the fears that he had suffered with throughout his life. Barton also wrote that he killed Leigh Ann because she was partly to blame for his demise. He then went on to describe the method he used to kill his family. There was little pain. All of them were dead in less than five minutes. I hit them with the hammer in their sleep and then put them face-down in the bathtub to make sure they did not wake up in pain, to make sure they were dead. The body of his wife was found under a blanket in a closet and the childrens bodies were found in their bed. Prime Suspect in Another Murder As the investigation into Barton continued, it was revealed that he had been the prime suspect in the 1993 murders of his first wife and her mother. Debra Spivey Barton, 36, and her mother, Eloise, 59, both of Lithia Springs, Georgia, went camping on Labor Day weekend. Their bodies were found inside their camper van. They had been bludgeoned to death with a sharp object. There was no sign of forced entry and although some jewelry was missing, other valuables and money had been left behind, leading investigators to put Barton on top of the list of suspects. A Lifetime of Trouble Mark Barton seemed to make bad decisions most of his life. In high school, he showed great academic potential in math and science, but started using drugs and ended up in hospitals and rehabilitation centers after overdosing several times. Despite his drug background, he got into Clemson University and, in his first year, he was arrested and charged with burglary. He was placed on probation, but that did not deter his drug use and he ended up leaving Clemson after suffering a breakdown. Barton then managed to get into the University of South Carolina, where he earned a degree in chemistry in 1979. His life seemed to level out some after college, although his drug use continued. He married Debra Spivey and in 1998 their first child, Matthew, was born. Bartons next brush with the law happened in Arkansas, where the family had relocated to due to his employment. There he began to show signs of severe paranoia and often accused Debra of infidelity. As time went on, he became increasingly controlling over Debras activities and exhibited strange behavior at work. In 1990 he was fired. Furious by the firing, Barton retaliated by breaking into the company and downloading sensitive files and secret chemical formulas. He was arrested and charged with felony burglary but got out of it after agreeing to a settlement with the company. The family moved back to Georgia where Barton got a new job in sales at a chemical company. His relationship with Debra continued to deteriorate and he began having an affair with Leigh Ann (later to become his second wife), who he had met through his work. In 1991, Mychelle was born. Despite the birth of a new child, Barton continued seeing Leigh Ann. The affair was no secret to Debra, who, for unknown reasons, decided not to confront Barton. Eighteen months later, Debra and her mother were found dead. Murder Investigation From the start, Barton was the prime suspect in the murders of his wife and mother-in-law. The police learned of his affair with Leigh Ann and that he had taken out a $600,000 life insurance policy on Debra. However, Leigh Ann told the police that Barton was with her over Labor Day weekend, which left investigators without evidence and a lot of speculation. Unable to charge Barton with the murders, the case was left unsolved, but the investigation was never closed. Due to the murders being unsolved, the insurance company refused to pay Barton, but later lost a lawsuit Barton filed and he ended up getting the $600,000. New Beginnings, Old Habits It was not long after the murders that Leigh Ann and Barton moved in together and in 1995 the couple married. However, just like what happened with Debra, Barton soon began showing signs of paranoia and distrust towards Leigh Ann. He also began losing money as a day-trader, big money. The financial pressures and Bartons paranoia took a toll on the marriage and Leigh Ann, along with the two children, left and moved into an apartment. Later the two reconciled and Barton rejoined the family. Within months of the reconciliation, Leigh Ann and the children would be dead. Warning Signs From interviews with those who knew Barton, there were no obvious signs that he was going to flip out, murder his family, and go on a shooting spree. However, he had earned the nickname Rocket at work because of his explosive behavior while day trading. This type of behavior was not all that unusual among this group of traders. It is a fast, high-risk game, where gains and losses can happen quickly. Barton did not talk much about his personal life with his fellow day traders, but many of them were aware of his financial loses. All-Tech had stopped allowing him to trade until he put money in his account to cover his losses. Unable to come up with the money, he turned to other day-traders for loans. But still, none of them had any idea that Barton was harboring resentment and about to explode. Witnesses later told police that Barton seemed to purposely seek out and shoot some of the people who had loaned him money. In one of the four letters he left in his home, he wrote about hating this life and having no hope and being terrified each time he woke up. He said that he did not expect to live much longer, just long enough to kill as many of the people that greedily sought my destruction. He also denied killing his first wife and her mother, although he admitted that there were similarities between how they were killed and how he killed his current wife and children. He ended the letter with, You should kill me if you can. As it turned out, he took care of that himself, but not before ending the lives of many others.

Boston Marathon Bombing

The whole issue started when two bombs struck near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, turning the prepared celebrations into a bloody scene of destruction. According to what was said by Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, the death toll had been three. Scores were injured at the scene. One of the dead was an 8-year-old boy, according to a state law enforcement source. Hospitals reported at least 144 people are being treated. At least eight of the patients are children. At least 10 people injured had limbs amputated, was treated by serial operations later on. Some injuries were so severe amputations were necessary. This all because of two mad young brothers vowed to protect and respect America and praised Allah to bless it. Some words are there about police deep failure said by many Americans connecting it to the failure of the CIA and FBI to prevent the 9/11 attacks, even though many of the perpetrators were known to these agencies and were being tracked. Despite the staggering security lapses that were acknowledged in the aftermath of 9/11, no high-level officials were fired. The American mass media have ignored an a report in the Russian newspaper Izvestia that it is in possession of documents from the Georgian Interior Ministry revealing that Tamerlan Tsarnaev , the guy who operated the attacks, attended a workshop in Georgia in the summer of 2012 sponsored by an organization called the Caucasus Fund, whose purpose was to recruit operatives in the northern Caucasus. The Georgian Interior Ministry has denied Izvestia ’s allegations, insisting that Tsarnaev never set foot in Georgia while all the American agencies were taking a nap out of all this. The US government has a long tradition of cultivating ties with such reactionary forces. It played a central role in fomenting radical Islamism in Afghanistan before and during the Soviet-Afghan war of the 1980s, in an effort to undermine Soviet influence in the region. The emergence of Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda, which evolved out of the organization that oversaw logistical support to the Islamist anti-Soviet fighters, was the direct product of this war. Bin Laden is the first suspect in the attacks of 9/11 and recently killed near the boundary area between Pakistan and Afghanistan. ( New questions on Boston bombing suspects’ ties to us intelligence, 2013) The US intelligence community should change his way of treatment going deeper into the reasons of such attacks to cut them off. No single justification will be accepted if any other American has been killed over the American Land by the hand of a terrorist. There is so much money and endless funds are spent for the sake of the national security. Those people are to work harder without any faults because a small damned fault can cost American people certain death. That’s the only recommendation to be given to prevent any coming attack. Cardenio of William Shakespeare Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Cardenio of William Shakespeare - Essay Example "Cardenio" of William Shakespeare William Shakespeare is a towering figure in English Literature. Beyond his uncontested stature in the world of letters, Shakespeare is on par with JS Bach in terms of contributions made to Western Civilization. Shakespeare’s works thus have a significance that is difficult to contain within simple classifications. The Bard’s art is a combination of poetry, philosophy and story-telling. His works stand the scrutiny of excellence in each of these disciplines. But the real singularity of Shakespeare’s works lie in the synergy of his art. The sum of merit in his great plays is more than an addition of the parts. It is in this context that the value of The History of Cardenio has to be evaluated. What makes the loss of Cardenio difficult to digest is the tantalizing evidence for its theatrical performance. Historical records from early 17th century indicate that the play was performed by The King’s Men in London in 1613. The Stationers’ Register attributes the play to William Shakespeare as co-author of John Fletcher. Although it is difficult to ascertain the extent of Shakespeare’s contribution to the finished work, his influence is speculated to be quite pronounced. The other key circumstantial evidence of the plays’ existence comes from two related plays from a later date. The lyrics of the popular song ‘Woods, Rocks and Mountains’ by Robert Johnson is fairly certain to have featured in Cardenio. Hence, there are enough markers and traces of the play’s existence and performance. ... The lyrics of the popular song ‘Woods, Rocks and Mountains’ by Robert Johnson is fairly certain to have featured in Cardenio. Hence, there are enough markers and traces of the play’s existence and performance. This makes it a case of so-near-yet-so-far. Modern scholarly analysis and revisionist research has given a glimpse of hope for those brooding over the lost work. It has come to light that the Cardenio could have remained in existence in some of its variant forms with different titles. On  the  eighteenth century wrapper of the text most widely known as The Second Maiden’s Tragedy, a  critic  of  an  earlier  age – possibly the third owner of the manuscript, John Warbuton â€Å"crossed out other contenders for possible authors or collaborators to leave only the words: ‘By Will Shakespear/ A Tragedy indeed’.† (Fox & Walter, 2004) Though such consolations remain, I regret the loss of this play for the great entert ainment value its original version suggested. The play’s plot is said to have been inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote. The character of the protagonist in Cardenio is said to have been inspired by his namesake appearing in Cervantes’ iconic work. In the novel, the young Cardenio is driven to madness and lives in the Spanish town of Sierra Morena. Madness is a constant theme in Shakespeare’s plays - Hamlet, King Lear and Othello come to mind readily. It would be fascinating to discover the interpretation and portrayal of a maddened youth in Cardenio. But madness in the context of Don Quixote could not have been tragic or serious. Hence by deduction it is fair to assume that comedy was at the core of the theme of madness noted in Cardenio. Features such as

Principles of Pathology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Principles of Pathology - Essay Example Clinical pathology deals with the laboratory analysis of the disease through examining the bodily fluids such as blood. Laboratory testing is a common way to diagnose a disease thus clinical pathology is commonly used in hospitals. Molecular pathology is also a similar type which examines the diseases through molecular analysis. It is usually practiced to cover those diseases that have strange causes or are genetic (Woolf, 1998, p. 17). General pathology is a wide term which describes the scientific aspect of diagnosing diseases. It is a wide term that covers all the specialist features of pathology. The scientific aspect talks about the mechanisms of the cell during the disease process. This includes the injury and the effects on the cells, along with the body’s functions to repair these cells. The rupture and infections caused to cells is investigated to diagnose the disease, and in regard to the treatment of the disease, these cells are treated and repaired. The study of general pathology includes the cellular response to diseases and injuries such as inflammation, necrosis and wound healing, etc. (Spector, 1999, p. 236). Improvements in the study of pathology and eventually in the diagnosis process of a disease can cause many improvements in the treatment of that disease as well. Diagnostic tests need to be accurate and authentic in order to control the diseases from spreading and becoming uncontrollable. In many developing countries, these tests still lack quality and thus effect the patient management. The pathological study is a specialist area in science where the performance of the diagnostic tests are judged and observed clearly. The performance of these tests will be successfully achieved if the information and method of diagnosis is not biased. Inaccuracy is an obstacle to healthcare for the people who are severely infected but

Careers in Writing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Careers in Writing - Essay Example development in the 21st century, through this, we shall be able to show the current industry challenges during this period, thus meet the objectives of the study. Fashion begun in the 1826 when designers were just dress makers with no sense of high style and any form of style only came from royalty and aristocrats (Jones, 2007).. The 21th century has seen the fashion industry spread to the world over, with the modern outlook and many designers joining the industry such as the Dolce & Gabbana and Calvin Klein among many others. Many have completely misunderstood the concept of the products that the fashion industry make, to some, a mere mention of the word ‘fashion’ denotes making of clothes only and nothing else, and still they view clothe as only the silk-made, cotton-made and others that we put on as skirts or blouses, which is partially right but a narrow view of the facts; these products actually encompass several commodities (Espejo, 2010). Fashion is an art of applying design or something natural on to somebody and this is influenced by culture, social background but the art also differ from time to time. The designers work to satisfy the consumer’s needs. These people try to make clothes that are functional and good to the consumer’s eye. They make accessories such as handbags, swords, umbrellas, watches, socks, scarves, hats and many others. So the composition of fashion goes beyond clothes into accessories that accompany the made clothes. It is therefore a very wide and diverse industry (Cumming, 2004). From the designers table and subsequent manufacture, the product must be sold to the consumer; however, how they reach the consumer is the focus of this study. So the big question is â€Å"by what means does the product reach the consumer?† To answer to this question it’s important to note that some designers use two levels of marketing that is, retail and wholesale levels. Various companies that do not reach to the consumer directly place

Hamlet Ophelia Shakespeare

Hamlet Ophelia Shakespeare Hamlet The Bad Shakespeares tragedy of Hamlet is considered to be Shakespeares finest tragedy. Throughout this play Hamlet experiences a variety of emotions however it is the emotions that are portrayed in Act III that define his character. Hamlet is presented in an unfavorable light based on his dealing with Ophelia, his mother and the killing of Polonius. In Act III Hamlets true personality came through and he was portrayed as a heartless person based on his actions with various characters. Hamlets dealing with Ophelia revealed that he was dishonest and was harsh in the way he spoke with her. Ophelia had confronted Hamlet about the letters and gifts that he had given her and he lied saying I never gave you aught (3.4.98). Hamlet later embarrasses her by telling her that he once loved her however he doesnt now. Poor Ophelia is ashamed and says I was the more deceived (3.1.122). Ophelia truly believed that Hamlet had loved her however he is now denying everything, including the letters and gifts that he gave her. Of course the abuse does not stop there. Hamlet tells Ophelia to Get thee to a nunnery (3.1.123) so that she wont breed more sinners and then chastises her for acting like a whore and painting (3.1.143) her face. Hamlet rebukes her saying that God has given you one face and you make yourselves another (3.1.143-144). Ophelia was disheartened that Hamlets noble mind is here oerthrown (3.1.150). Hamlet certainly showed himself to be offensive and harsh and his actions would hurt anyones feelings. Hamlets revenge on women certainly did not stop with Ophelia. The next woman to receive Hamlets wrath is his own mother, Gertrude. Gertrude called Hamlet to her room to try and find out what was wrong with him. However, Hamlet had decided that he was going to be cruel, not unnatural (3.2.370). Hamlet was going to tell his mother what he thought of her and was going to speak daggers to her but use none (3.2.371); he was going to be malicious with his words. Hamlet proceeded to tell Gertrude that because she had married her first husbands brother so quickly the heavens were sick at the act (3.4.52). She had married such a wonderful man and when he died she married Claudius and dropped from such a lofty position. Hamlet told her that she stewed in corruption, honeying and making love (3.4.94). Gertrude was so hurt by this that she begged that he speak No more (3.4.103). Hamlet yelled at her to Confess yourself to heaven. Repent whats past (3.4.151-152). Poor Gertrude could only respond that thou hast cleft my heart in twain (3.4.158); Hamlet had broken her heart. Hamlets tone and actions were so scary and erratic to Gertrude that she asked him if Thou wilt not murder me (3.4.22)? Hamlet is definitely portraying an individual that is heartless and without soul. An individual that has a conscience, self respect or dignity would never resort to terrifying their mother. Hamlets reign of terror ended with him killing Polonius. When Hamlet had scared his mother so much she called out for help and Polonius replied from behind the curtains. Hamlet said How now, a rat (3.4.25) and stabs through the curtain not knowing who was behind it. This would appear to have been an accident however when Hamlet realized that it was Polonius he did not show any remorse. Hamlet was expecting it to be Claudius behind the curtain however when he found out that it was Polonius he said I took thee for thy better (3.4.33; he thought it was someone more important. Hamlet then proceeded to call him a wretched, rash, intruding fool (3.4.32). Hamlet just killed a man and yet shows no grief or remorse over his actions. Instead he simply tells the rat that he got what he deserved. At the end of the scene he drags Polonius out of the room without dignity or care. In conclusion, Hamlet proved to everyone that he is truly a sinful person with no respect for human life or the feelings of others. Hamlet even referred to himself as proud, revengeful, ambitious (3.1.126). Throughout Act III Hamlet lied, berated and killed for his own benefit. These are not the qualities that someone of a positive nature would possess. The dealings that Hamlet had with Ophelia, his mother and the killing of Polonius prove that Hamlet is a negative force to be reckoned with which was clearly determined in Act III.

The Left Membrane Vs. The Right Membrane :: essays papers

THE LEFT MEMBRANE VS. THE RIGHT MEMBRANE â€Å"Most people equate learning with studying, but psychologists define it more broadly, as the process by which experience or practice results in a relatively permanent change in behavior or potential behavior. This definition certainly encompasses academic learning, but it covers many other forms of learning as well: learning to turn off lights when we leave a room, learning which way to put the key into the front door lock, learning how to avoid falling down on skis, learning how to dance† (Morris & Maistro, 185). The largest part of the human brain is the cerebrum. It is divided into two haves, or hemispheres, each of which controls is opposite half of the body, The hemispheres are connected by a band of some three hundred million nerve cell fibers called the corpus callosum. Covering each hemisphere is a one-eighth-inch-thick, intricately folded layer of nerve cells called the cortex. The cortex first appeared in our ancestors about two hundred million years ago, and it is what makes us uniquely human. Because of it, we are to organize, remember, communicate, understand, appreciate, and create. The brain regulates all bodily functions. It controls our most primitive behavior; eating, sleeping, keeping warm, it is responsible for our most sophisticated activities; the creation of civilization, of music, art, science, and language. Our hopes, thoughts, emotions, and personality are all lodged-somewhere-inside there. â€Å"After thousands of scientist have studied it for centuries, the only word to describe it remains Amazing† (Ornstein & Thompson, 15). In normal people, the switch with manic depression, allows either the left or right hemisphere to be dominant during different mental tasks, with the two sides constantly taking turns. In people with manic depression, one hemisphere becomes locked into a dominant position in periods of depression while the other hemisphere is locked at times of mania. â€Å"The notion that the human brain has two halves and that the left side is associated with logical, analytical thinking while the right side is more intuitive, emotional and creative was popularized about 20 years ago, and soon became received wisdom about how the brain works† (Castro). â€Å"The new theories are also appealing to many experts because they take on a question that has divided researchers for decades. Do people have one overarching mind that spans the two hemispheres? Or are they born with two separate minds -- one on the left and one on the right -- which operate so seamlessly that the person simply does not notice that there are two?

Brazilian culture Essay

Culture refers to the norms, values and conceptions which influences an individual’s behavior. They are usually not tangible things though they greatly affect or influence the reactions or response of an individual to certain circumstances. Different communities have different cultures which are usually expressed through the various artifacts and symbols as well as ceremonies and traditions. The national culture of a place is usually expressed through the language spoken, the religion practiced, the etiquette and attitudes of the people, body language as well a literature, arts and music in such a country. The national culture of a country influences the way things and business are carried out and as such the performance of different entities within the country. Brazilian culture Brazil is located in the southern America and it is characterized by different and diverse culture which is as a result of cultural and ethnic mixing between the Africans, the native Americans and the Portuguese which occurred during the colonial era which. Other groups of people which have greatly influenced the culture of Brazil are the Spanish, Arabs, the Germans and the Italian immigrants who settled in Brazil between the 19th and the 20th century. This diverse nature of Brazilian people has given rise to a national culture which is so diverse. Portugal however was the major country which greatly influences the culture of Brazil since it was its colonizer. During the colonization period, the Brazilian people were having close contact with the Brazilians especially because Portuguese colonizers inhabited Brazil in large numbers. The slaves who were mostly black Africans also influenced greatly the formation of the Brazilian culture (Nava & Lauerhass, 2006). During the colonial period, the Portuguese wanted the Brazilians to be civilized and thus introduced Portuguese language as well as Catholicism. Portuguese is the most widely spoken language in Brazil although Spanish is also spoken in some parts. English is the second language which is spoken after Portuguese. However, the Brazilian Portuguese is different from Portuguese which is spoken in Portugal and other Portuguese speaking countries. The Brazilian Portuguese contains additional words which are coined from their native language. Most of the Brazilians can speak English though not frequently while a good number of them can hear and understand Spanish though they may not speak it. As mentioned above, Catholicism is widely practiced with most of the individuals thus being Christians. Brazil is one of the countries which have the largest number of catholic population although other beliefs like Hinduism, ayahuasca, spiritism, Judaism and Buddhism have evolved overtime. Other groups of Christianity like the Mormon Church, Methodism and Pentecostalism are also gaining root in Brazil. An annual religious celebration known as carnaval is held in Brazil for forty days and it is celebrated before Easter which marks the lent period (Thomas, 2007). The Brazilian music is composed mostly of traditional styles for example samba, frevo and forro among others. Brazil also has classical music which dates back to the 18th century. The music industry in Brazil is marked by diversity especially after Brazil become democratic in 1985 whereby hip hop music was largely adopted. Music in the past was largely influenced by social classes which existed between the rich, the middle class and the poor people. However, most of the traditional songs were neutral and did not favor any class thus unifying the country music industry. Another important feature of Brazilian culture is their literature which can be traced back to the 16th century. Portuguese explores during the colonial period wrote different poems, plays and chronicles describing Brazil. Brazilian writers started writing soon after independence in 1822 which marked the beginning of natives’ prominence in literature. They also have a folk literature tradition although little of is known internationally. This folk literature is usually done by displaying verses in a booklet format which are hanged on the wall using strings in rhymed verses. This is common in the northeast region where illiteracy level is still high (Nava & Lauerhass, 2006). As mentioned above, carnival is one of the most celebrated events and acts as symbol of the Brazilian people. During this celebration, costumed dancers as well as musicians form parades both formal and even in the streets for a period of four days. This event is celebrated nationally with carnival symbolizing national ethos especially because it depicts the dualities of life of the Brazilians which is divided among the poverty and wealth, female and males and Europeans and Africans. Football is also another highly celebrated activity in Brazil. During major soccer matches like the world cup, all national attention is diverted to soccer with most of the people wearing clothes decorated with colors of their national flag (Garibaldi de Hilal, 2006). Brazilians unlike people in the North America have little sense especially of personal space when it comes to their etiquette. The Brazilians may be found in large and also crowded areas which do not bother them. Respect is usually accorded according to the dressing code of a person. To command respect, one thus has to wear appropriately to fit his or her class as dressing is used as a symbol of class. Also, these people tend to physically expressive and they convey some of their emotional information via touching. Touching in Brazil is translated to mean friendship or concern about the welfare of the other person. Women are more inclined to touching and kissing their fellow women as a sign of greetings while men usually pat or bear hug their male counterparts. People like doctors, professors and priests among other are addressed using their titles which is them followed by their first names. Body language is also used in Brazil and is usually varied depending on the social class or standing of an individual. Domestic or house servants greet their masters usually by a limp handshake while slightly bowing the head and lowering the eyes. They address their masters with respectful you (senhora) while masters address servants as voce. Graduates and other educated persons are addressed as doctor. The Brazilians are not bothered by nudity and this is verifiable through scanty dressing that is worn during carnival (Nava & Lauerhass, 2006). In Brazil, personal relationships are valued with body language being highly used while expressing emotions. Touching is one way of expressing concern, friendship and even interest on the other people’s point of view. People who tend to keep their distance while talking to their counterparts are usually considered to be cold and uninterested. Also the national language that is Portuguese is highly valued and even those who can speak English prefer speaking in their native Portuguese language. The Brazilians also value or regard highly their symbols which include the carnival and soccer (Garibaldi de Hilal, 2006). The national culture of a country affects in a great manner the running of the national affairs as well as the businesses. While carrying out business activities in an area, it is vital to understand the culture which the community holds as this would influence workers motivation and commitment to the business as well as the community’s perception of the business. Apart from the expertise or experience of the workers and the managers, national culture contributes in largely to the growth or stagnation of a business and as such it should be treated carefully. Knowledge of the Brazilian culture would influence greatly how a business is to be carried out in this region. As mentioned above, personal relationship is very important to the Brazilians and as such, this would impact greatly to the way a business operates. While carrying out business in this region, it is vital for the managers to ensure that they create personal relationships with their workers as this would act as a motivation factor. Managers who keep their distance may be viewed as being cold or rude in Brazil and as such, understanding the culture of the Brazilians would help in managing and running a business successfully (Ferreira, et al, n. d). Brazilians also respect and adore their symbols which are mainly soccer and carnival celebrations. During this period, most of the Brazilians are committed to the celebrations and as such may not be willing to work as usual or for long hours. Understanding the value the Brazilians attach to these functions would influence how activities of a business are carried out. This is more so because these celebrations are nationally accepted as part of their culture. During the festive period, the business may be run fewer hours be closed till the festive seasons is over. Learning to value what the native Brazilians value would help in establishing an entity in this region and also earning the commitment of the workers to the business (Ferreira, et al, n. d). Conclusion For any business to be successful, it is vital to ensure that it observes and values the national culture in existence in a particular area. The culture of a community or a country determines the attitudes, behavior and response of the workers in an organization and as such, managers should ensure that they fully understand the national culture existing in a country as this is bound to influence not only the workers performance of tasks but also the running of the business. A company deemed to esteem the national culture is more likely to be successful that a company comprising of good management team but which does not respect or observe the national culture. Free Essays on Krapps Last Tape

Krapp’s Last Tape Krapp’s Last Tape, a play by Samuel Beckett is a very interesting peek at one period of a man’s life, and his reflections on his past. Samuel Beckett isn’t your average playwright, and in accordance with that, I found this play to be very different and intriguing. Beckett seems to be using his character, Krapp, to illustrate his theories in existentialism, which makes for a very interesting theme and outcome to the play. The style of this play is actually one that I have never encountered before. It was a realistic person with a somewhat realistic set, but in no reality that I have ever seen. It says in the introduction to the play that absurdists, such as Beckett, â€Å"felt that the ridiculous- or absurd - nature of existence should be reflected in the dramatic elements of their plays†. I suppose that by having Krapp, the main and only character sit in a desolate spot listening to himself on a tape from thirty years ago and muse over his past is supposed to reflect the absurdity that he thinks his life has been. The style that worked for me personally because the ridiculousness that Krapp regarded his life to have full of was not only apparent in the diction that Krapp spoke, but also in the stage directions that Beckett gave the character. Even the title tells us something that we do not get in the lines of the play, which is that this is Krapp’s last tape, which most likely mea ns he will die after it is made.
